I didn't win the election. Not even close. I didn't expect to win, but there were at least 2 other names on that ballot for Ward 2 who were people who would have cared. Ken Imer was re-elected. My suggestion now, is that anyone who wants the bridge saved, write him letters, send him emails, call him, etc. Write your congressman/woman. Anyone in a position to make decisions. I am NOT giving up, because it is not in my nature to give up.
I have heard from at least 10 people, start a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to fix the bridge. This, because the state has made it clear they will not fix it, and there are no plans for another bridge. If the Aetnaville Bridge is demolished, I'd have to say, please no one hold your breath waiting for a "new Bridge" in it's place, because after living in Wheeling for 3/4s of my 54 years, I know that will never happen. I site the old Manchester bridge in East Wheeling as my evidence. Anyone remember that? The people of East Wheeling were promised a new bridge before it was demolished, and now it is more than 20 years later, and there has been nothing done at all.
We have heard nothing at all about the bridge in a few months, and that silence scares me.
The problem with a Kickstarter campaign, is that you need to reach the full amount of your donations in a certain amount of time, or you do not receive them. I don't know what other crowd-funding campaign out there would be more appropriate, but someone who recommended going this route said he would donate the first $20. Guys, we will not only wait until hell freezes over to get enough to fix the bridge that way, but not only that, we will run out of time. Someone wants to sell the scrap metal from our beautiful bridge, and time is of the essence for someone to do something to stop it from happening. I've been told to "have a fundraiser". I'm not in a financial position to do that. If anyone on this page is, please contact me.
I think, the $800,000 set aside to demolish the Aetnaville Bridge, should be used to fix it. The problem with my run for Wheeling city council, is that a lot of the bridge's supporters live on the Ohio side and couldn't vote for me, or live just outside of my ward, and couldn't vote for me. I've been called the crazy bridge lady, and worse. But I'm proud of what I did, because I'm not one to sit around and hope someone else does something- I've been let down way too many times in my life for that. I have a vision of how great this bridge could be. It could be a tourist attraction, like the bridges in other cities, where people care about their history and do not tear all of it down.
If anyone has any other ideas of what we can do now, please feel free to contact me.
