Aug 18, 2015 — Written by Gary Young · Who was born and raised on Wheeling Island: "The Aetnaville bridge has been a part of just about everybody that lives or has lived on the Island..that's Wheeling Island.. Wheeling, W.Va. As a kid I walked across the bridge with my mom and dad into Ohio to shop at the local store there.. as do so many people today.. the bridge is deep in my DNA as it was and will be for years to come.. we don't need another.."Well, son..this here is where the Aetnaville bridge used to stand until some government guy decided he wanted to tear the bridge down for his own reasons.. and he never even stood on the bridge and looked down stream.." That's right.. we have enough of "What used to be here" in Wheeling... we need a physical thing..like a bridge to connect to the past.. we did it with McAllister's drug store, or as you newer people call it.. the Gene Long Building.. which is fine.. but it will always be McAllister's to me... Save our bridge..don't be some government clown who just has to "protect the folks from themselves" and tear down our beloved bridge... the bridge is safe and we know how to use it for our needs..."
