SAFE ROUTE TO SCHOOL started this petition to West Sussex County Council

Did you know that some Shoreham children are expected to walk around 3 miles (approx. 1hr), alongside the very busy A27 dual carriageway in order to get to and from their catchment school? Would you be happy to do this every day, let alone an 11-16 year old?

The Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing was made a catchment school for Shoreham by West Sussex County Council to accommodate the increasing population. However, W.S.C.C. did not facilitate a transport provision for the children to actually get there safely. The school have kindly part funded a coach service for some of the children, but they do not have the capacity or resources to accommodate all children travelling the route. Parent's have to make up the rest.

We don't think funding for transport should have to come out of the school's own budget, nor should parents have to pay for their children to attend their catchment school.

West Sussex County Council have repeatedly told Shoreham families that the A27 is a safe walking route even though, as a cycling route, they have described it as very hostile. They do not take into account the 60+ MPH speed of traffic, lack of crash barriers, unlit pathways, high pollution above recommended safety levels and hazardous laybys and junctions to navigate as vehicles enter/exit at high speed. This means, subject to national guidelines, that they are not obliged to provide alternative, funded travel.

Currently over 100 children have to make this journey and over the coming years, the demand will continue to increase.

There are now additional hazards along the A27 with the increase of construction traffic and predicted congestion caused by the New Monks Farm Development.

In the long term we have been told that there will be a safer walking route via New Monks Farm, but this will take years. Until that time, we need West Sussex County Council to use their discretionary powers to override the national guidance they use to say the A27 is safe for our children to walk, and provide an interim, funded transport provision to enable safe travel.

Please support us by signing this petition. Once we reach 3k signatures, West Sussex County Council will be obliged to debate this issue, when we intend to ask for a suitable, funded alternative until it is safe for ALL our children to walk and cycle to their catchment school.
