Include a swimming pool in the new Market Rasen Leisure Centre

The Issue

Over the years there has been a substantial amount of campaigning and fundraising to have leisure facilities in Market Rasen, in particular a swimming pool. It is very disappointing that the council plans for a leisure centre don’t currently include a swimming pool. Other towns including Louth and Wragby have such facilities. The need for a facility like this will support the people of the town and the surrounding area and the investment will benefit local employment and our local economy.

A swimming pool will benefit all ages of the community, from young to old. It will improve a number of areas including health, fitness, wellbeing, social development and anti social behaviour. The number of visitors to a leisure centre would dramatically increase with a swimming pool compared to without and this will have a positive impact for local businesses. I understand that a feasibility study has been carried out but has this included accurate projected income from the addition of a swimming pool compared to figures from other local leisure centres?

‘Feasibility studies have shown that a pool is not financially viable. However, the development has been future proofed and designed in such a way that a pool can be added at a future date.’

The cost of including a swimming pool at the time of building the leisure centre may increase the overall cost but it would cost considerably less than adding it in at a later date. It would mean amending existing structures and consideration of additional changing facilities.

‘West Lindsey District Council are working with Market Rasen Town Council on a three year vision for the town. As part of this we have agreed to re-look at whether a pool is viable within the next three years. It will be important for the Town and District Council to work together to increase the population and economic backbone of the town in order to make a pool a viable proposition.’

As a community let’s include the swimming pool from the start and spend the next 3 years putting our efforts into increasing the visitors and population of our town and surrounding area to improve and increase economic growth instead of campaigning for a swimming pool.

Thank you for taking the time to sign this petition. It would also be beneficial if as many residents as possible could take the time to complete the following survey too it would be greatly appreciated.

PLEASE MENTION THAT THERE IS NO POOL FOR RASEN RESIDENTS IN THE EASTERN AREA (feel free to copy and paste any wording from this petition).
