Update the information that I shared about the timeline the President having to sign bills into law was incorrect; Generally, for any bill that Congress has passed, the president gets 10 calendar days — excluding Sundays — after receiving a bill to either sign the bill into law or veto it, according to the Congressional Research Service. When Congress is in session, a bill would become law once 10 days have passed, even if the president has not signed it.
Regardless of how little time is left in the current Congress, the president still gets a full 10 days after receiving a bill to take action on it — even if the deadline occurs after Congress has adjourned.
December 27th was the date H.R. 82 was presented, so the deadline is January 8th.
The National Fraternal Oder of Police stated in an email the following:
"Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The National Board of Trustees has just been notified that President Biden will have a bill signing ceremony for the Social Security Fairness Act on Monday, January 6, 2025.
More Details to Follow.
Fraternally,
Marinos Marinos
Recording Secretary/National Trustee
DC FOP Lodge"
Since H.R. 82 has passed in Congress and if you are thinking about planning for your retirement and when to apply for Social Security benefits, you can use a simple calculation, like individuals that weren't a public service employee or retiree and not effected by Windfall Elimination Provisions or Government Pension Offset. To determine your break-even age without trying to factor in your Social Security payments with WEP/GPO reductions has become simpler for everyone.
First log into My Social Security or create an account, view your retirement calculation based on the age you plan to retire, then multiply by 12 to determine your yearly salary. Then, write down the payment you would receive if you collect SS early versus your normal retirement age. Then, you can work out your break even age using the below formula or just use the break even calculator with your full retirement age.

Thanks again for supporting www.change.org/Act2RepealWEP_GPO and being an advocate for Social Security Fairness Act. I will not be providing to many more updates on Act2RepealWEP_GPO as the last piece of legislation we await is for Congress to present H.R. 82 to the President for his signature.
According to the Congressional Research Service. The increases — as much as $550 a month for some retirees but average of $360 by December 2025/2026
— would be retroactive to December 2023.
