I am a former District of Columbia, Metropolitan Police Department Officer from Washington D.C. I joined the M.P.D C. Police Department in 1990, I served in the 4th District working the streets as a patrol officer until 1997. In 1997, I was assigned to the Patrol Canine Handler Unit in the Special Operation Division until my retirement in 2018. During those 20 years of service, I handled a patrol canine or a patrol/narcotics canine. While assigned to Special Operation Division, I also routinely assisted our Special Events Unit working on Presidential details, providing security for the President of the United States. Task with securing locations on the President scheduled travel planned routes or where he was scheduled to stop or assist on his transportation details, along with providing security for other Heads of States and Dignitaries. During my 27 years of service as a Police Officer, I did not pay into Social Security but paid into a pension except for a few of those years where I worked a part-time jobs. Prior to joining the Police force, I worked on jobs paying into Social Security while in high school and college. Upon graduation college with a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, I worked for Bendix Communication Company located in Virginia as a technician from 1988 until joining the M.P.D.C. Police Department in 1990. 2018, I retiring from Metropolitan Police Department.
I worked for the Prince George's County Board of Elections as a warehouse and field support technician in 2018 and 2020. During those same years, I also worked at a local vineyard in my neighborhood named Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards located in Maryland. In October of 2020, I joined the Charles County Sheriff's Office located in Maryland, where I am currently assigned now as a Court Deputy and I am paying into Social Security. As a result of my years of working other jobs besides as a Police Officer, I paid into Social Security for 14 years and earned my required 40 credits. I am 54 years of age, therefore I am not allowed to draw Social Security until age 62.
I became aware of Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset from studying the Social Security benefits website, in the year of approximately 2013.
At the age of 62, I calculated my Social Security benefits to be $757 with no WEP and $407 with WEP and at age 67, I calculate my Social Security to be $1293 with no WEP and $781 with WEP.
As I result of WEP and GPO laws that were in put in place in 1983 and 1977 respectively, I realize after working 30 years in law enforcement that I can not retire and live comfortably as I originally planned when I joined the police department.
Losing $512 dollars has cause me to altar my life plans and continue working and start a WEP and GPO petition in an attempt to help myself and the other 2.5 million citizens affected by this harmful bill in and attempt to overturn these laws and receive our rightful share of Social Security benefits.
Congressman and Congressladies please read my petition and I urge you all to support Social Security Fairness Act. We need 16 more Representatives to cosponsor thr proposed bill H.R. 82 that is currently before the 117th Congress and then will need a total of 60 Senators to cosponsor its companion bill S. 1302. The deadline to get the proposed legislation to the House floor to repeal WEP and GPO is June 22nd so Representatives please act now and encourage your colleagues in the Senate to support S. 1302.
