Make Swansea Prison safer

It has been running at 140%+ capacity for some time now.

In the past 10 years there have been 11 suicides in Swansea prison - all by hanging and the vast majority during the early days of reception.

Of the statistics available, all but one of the suicides since 2010 were recalled or remand prisoners.

The prison inspectorate has published a damning report on 4 January 2018, criticising the prison's safety arrangements, suicide and self harm management and failure to act on remedial recommendations.

Despite this, there was a further suicide on 14 January this year, Robert Lee Evans, age 32(pictured above), again within a few days of reception and by hanging.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Ministry of Justice and the Welsh Labour government to place Swansea prison under embargo for receipt of prisoners until such time as all recommendations by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) have been met and particularly until B wing is safe and fit for purpose
