Give cats the same protection as other animals

The Issue

After the atrocities that occured at Y Nant Cat sanctuary over the weekend it has highlighted the pressing need to review the law regarding cats. Currently the cruel torture suffered by the victims of this attack (3 elderly cats)and the fate the remaining trapped cats were facing is only prosecutable as criminal damage as cats are deemed as property of the owner. This is unacceptable. If a cat is killed on the road, no-one has to report it. They have no legal obligation. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 only protects animals abused or neglected by an owner or person responsible for them. This has to change. Too many cats are being killed or maimed by individuals for pleasure. These are living feeling animals who are just as loving and valuable to its family as a dog. Let's get this to parliament and change the law to protect our pets. All acts of cruelty to animals must be dealt with the most severe senrance possible. As this stands, it is far too lenient. Step up the punishment to deter this continuous barbaric from happening time after time again.
