Hello, I have decided to create this petition as I feel very strongly. In 1965 the Original Afan Lido in Port Talbot in South Wales was first opened by the Queen of England, it was just a standard length swimming pool and then around about the late 80s early 90s it was converted into an aqua dome fully fitted out with slides, wave machines, sound effects for the water cannons and there was the option to ride rubber dingies down the slides so it became something for all ages across the board to enjoy. But sadly in 2009 it burnt down causing complete destruction and an icon in british history was lost as people from all over the world came just for the experience and then in 2012 the building was knocked down and Port Talbot council designed a new building for the area which only has a gym and a very small length pool, so it may not be possible to build in Port Talbot but there's potential to build somewhere else in South Wales. Most people wanted it built the same as before but they were not going to create a replica as it apparently cost them a lot of money to run which doesn't make sense as it was something that was around for at least 45 years so it couldn't have been that bad. I am passionate about this as I used to love going there as a kid it was like being in a different world the place was just very futuristic, but also because I know a lot of people who would love to see the return of such an icon and there will be so many kids out there who will have never have seen this place but would love it. They say things can be replaced but to me it was like a person it had its own character, look, feel and vibe it was unique and still would be today. The council say they listened to people but they didn't, why do councils spend public money on things we don't want. So I hope everyone who reads this will help make this happen by sharing and letting people know as it would be nice to see such an icon make a return. Thank You. I'm using my own money to promote this so if you could maybe share it on social media it would be a great help after all we all have the chance of reaping the rewards if it actually happens. Also it was the only leisure centre in the world or in the UK anyway that could accommodate live bands and artists signed to major labels, such as Motorhead, Mcfly, Tom Jones etc, and given this Covid-19 thing where music venues are being closed left right and center.
