In England, the law has been changed where a blanket ban on pets by private landlords is no longer allowed. Unless there is a good reason why you would not be allowed to have a pet, (circumstances, suitability) they cannot refuse.

This is not the case in Wales. Private landlords can still refuse to allow pets without good reason. Some would agree to an extra deposit to allow for potential damage a pet may cause, at present few private landlords allow pets by default.

RSPCA Wales have asked the Senedd to change the rules to allow pets by default like England.

Having a pet can make such a difference to some people. It can help mental health, get people out and about walking, provide great company and comfort. So many animals need a loving home, and not being allowed a pet in private rented accomodation is denying many of these animals a home, and also creates more homeless pets if a tenant has to give their pet up so as to get somewhere to live.
