45,000 reasons Wales needs a dementia strategy

This petition had 5,836 supporters

There are currently 45,000 people estimated to be living with dementia in Wales, less than 50% of whom have received a formal diagnosis. Receiving a diagnosis of dementia empowers people to make decisions about the care and support they receive; it opens the door to accessing services and, where necessary, medication.

However, even those who have received a diagnosis have most likely not received the information and support that they need in order to live well with dementia.  1 in 10 people with dementia in Wales did not receive any support at all in the first year after their diagnosis, leaving them to deal with their diagnosis alone.

People living with dementia in Wales are less likely to receive a diagnosis, and are less likely to have access to post-diagnosis support than those living in the rest of the UK. This has to change.

We want the Welsh Government to develop a dementia strategy for Wales, one that demonstrates a commitment to improving diagnosis rates, and ensures the access to local services and the quality of care that people living with dementia deserve.

Sign our petition to call on the Welsh Government to commit to a dementia strategy that improves the lives of people living with dementia in Wales.

45,000 o resymau pam fo ar Gymru angen strategaeth ar ddementia

Amcangyfrifir fod yna 45,000 o bobl yn byw â dementia yng Nghymru ar hyn o bryd, ac mae llai na 50% ohonynt wedi derbyn diagnosis ffurfiol.  Mae derbyn diagnosis o ddementia’n grymuso pobl i wneud penderfyniadau am y gofal a’r gefnogaeth y maent yn eu derbyn; mae’n agor y drws i gael at wasanaethau a, ble y bo angen, meddyginiaeth.

Fodd bynnag, mae’n debygol iawn bod hyd yn oed y rheiny sydd wedi derbyn diagnosis heb dderbyn yr wybodaeth a’r gefnogaeth y mae arnynt eu hangen er mwyn byw’n dda â dementia.  Ni dderbyniodd 1 o bob 10 o bobl â dementia yng Nghymru unrhyw gefnogaeth o gwbl yn y flwyddyn gyntaf ar ôl eu diagnosis, gan adael iddynt ymdopi â’u diagnosis ar eu pen eu hunain.

Mae pobl sy’n byw â dementia yng Nghymru yn llai tebygol o dderbyn diagnosis, ac maent yn llai tebygol o gael mynediad at gymorth ar ôl diagnosis na’r rheiny sy’n byw yng ngweddill y Deyrnas Unedig.  Mae’n rhaid i hyn newid.

Mae arnom eisiau i Lywodraeth Cymru ddatblygu strategaeth ar ddementia i Gymru, strategaeth sy’n dangos ymrwymiad i wella cyfraddau diagnosis ac sy’n sicrhau’r mynediad at wasanaethau lleol a’r ansawdd gofal y mae pobl sy’n byw â dementia’n ei haeddu.

Llofnodwch ein deiseb i alw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i ymrwymo i strategaeth ar ddementia sy’n gwella bywydau pobl sy’n byw â dementia yng Nghymru.
