Changes to Welfare & Social Assistance

The Issue

People in Canada are becoming frustrated by the abuse of welfare and social assistance programs. We are aware there are people that need these programs and we think there is a better way they can be used to benefit the economy and the people in need.

Non-profits and Charities make up 8.1% of Canada’s GDP and 10.5% of the labour force. They are always hurting for volunteers and have been proven to help boost economies and relieve some of the financial stresses on governments and local communities.

The Concept:

Social assistance shouldn't be a free ride, it should be a safety net used to help those that are down on their luck.

If we stipulate that those on Social Assistance are to contribute their time to local non-profits until they're able to find a job, they'll be able to develop their job skills, which would benefit their resumes and job search. Giving back to the community will also help their self-esteem, the economy and give them a sense of purpose.

It will also help as a preventative measure for those abusing the system in order to not have to work. We've heard from employers saying that they've received resumes from people, while at the same time asking not to be hired, they just need to "look" like they're trying to find a job.

We believe that with this change, we'll have a program that benefits everyone and that will help Canada become more prosperous while also maintaining compassion for those that need help.

We want the government to acknowledge and implement this concept.
