Help Save the Bijarim Forest and the Biggest Nutmeg Forest of Asia!

The Issue

The Bijarim forest is being threatened to be cut down for the creation of the 2nd Jeju international airport. This is a problem to be solved because of some of the Bijarim's qualities; Natural, Economical, and Historical.

The first quality we have to see to identify the importance of the Bijarim forest is its natural quality. The Bijarim forest of Jeju is one of the 5 only untouched Gotjawal. The Gotjawal itself exists only in Jeju and is a true treasure to the world. Also, the Bijarim forest contains the most nutmeg trees in the whole of Asia, and also contains the oldest tree in the whole of Jeju, a Nutmeg tree older than 800 years. Finally, it is also an important factor of withering out strong typhoons that strike Jeju island numerous times every year. It also is a habitat for many endangered animals.

The second quality of Bijarim is the economical quality. The Bijarim is a major tourist attraction in Jeju, for it attracted 800,000 tourists every year and after the pandemic, it still got 600,000 tourists. With the entrance fee being 3,000KRW for adults, we can estimate that about that the Bijarim earns about 240,000,000 KRW per year, a major part of Jeju's tourism.

Finally, the Bijarim has some crucial historical qualities. The Japanese Nutmeg Yew was used as food and spice in the old times of Jeju. The seeds were also used as a natural cooking oil. The ancestors of the Jeju people used wood to create buckets to carry water along long distances to sustain a living. The people and other creatures of Jeju have also become used to living in this kind of environment and the Bijarim has protected the Jeju island for a long time.

This shows that the Bijarim forest is a crucial part of both economic, natural, and historical ways and this can prove that Bijarim should be a protected preserve. Even though it technically is a preserve right now, the government is considering destroying it to create a second airport. Please help us protect this haven!
