Yesterday, we won a TEMPORARY victory on Trumpcare. After crafting the Senate's Obamacare replacement bill in secret and only publicly releasing it a few days ago, Senate Majority Leader McConnell planned to have the Senate vote on the terrible measure THIS WEEK. Thanks to your calls and visits to your Senators, McConnell didn't have the votes to pass the bill -- which would take away healthcare from 22 million people! He was forced to retreat and postpone the vote until after the July 4th recess. The GOP Senate "healthcare" bill is absolutely monstrous. Here is what is hidden among the hundreds of pages: 1. Allows states to reimpose lifetime and annual benefit caps. In other words, your insurance can stop paying for all treatments -- even if you have cancer or need an organ transplant -- once you've spent a certain amount that THEY decide on! 2. Allows states to eliminate essential health benefits like coverage for pregnancy, hospitalization, prescriptions, substance abuse and mental health treatment. 3. Destroys protection for people with preexisting conditions. 4. Saddles older Americans with much higher premiums and costs -- at least three times higher, from what I've read! 5. Allows the largest tax cut ever given to the rich to be retroactive. 6. Cripples the fight against opioid addiction. 7. Allows salaries for health insurance chief executives to go through the roof. So what do we do now? We can't rest. McConnell will be using the Senate July 4th recess to twist arms and horse trade so he can get enough votes to pass his miserable Trumpcare bill. From our friends at Indivisible (via the New York Times): “When senators go home, they need to see how many constituents don’t want this bill. They can’t even be thinking about voting for this bill when they come back.” So here's our plan. If you have a Republican Senator and can visit his or her local office over the next week (Senators should be in their hometowns July 3 - 7), please do! If you can attend a July 4th parade or other event your Senator is attending, you can try to talk to them there or lead a protest. If you can't manage a visit to a Senator's office, please call! Talking points and calling information are below: GOT A REPUBLICAN SENATOR? 1) As your constituent, I DO NOT want you to vote yes on the Senate healthcare bill because it will hurt me and my family. 2) Tell your own personal story about how the bill will hurt you. Or, you can say that the bill will remove protections for pre-existing conditions, raise premiums on older Americans and cause 22 million people to lose healthcare insurance. This is cruel and unacceptable. NOTE: If the Senator or his staff try to argue with you (they've been lying and saying their awful bill won't hurt people), tell them you don't believe them and will hold them ACCOUNTABLE for their vote when they're up for re-election. 3) The way to proceed on healthcare is to leave Obamacare INTACT and make fixes to the program -- fixes that experts have said could make the program more affordable and better. GOT A DEMOCRATIC SENATOR? 1) Thank you for taking TOUGH actions to fight the GOP healthcare bill! 2) Please keep up all efforts to slow the Senate to a halt and to filibuster by amendment the Trumpcare bill if McConnell decides to bring it to the floor. Here's how to reach your Senators: 1) Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. An operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request. 2) If you don't know the names of your Senators, the operator will tell you their names, if you give them the name of your state. 3) You'll have to call the switchboard TWICE to speak to both of your Senators -- and do leave a message for both! If your Senator's line is continually busy or mailbox full, try the next day or try calling one of the Senator's local offices. Thank you again, for all the calls you have made on this issue in the past few weeks. Please do not stop calling and visiting your Senators until this despicable bill is dead and buried.
