First, I want to thank everyone who has shown up to this conversation. Whether you are in support of this petition, against it, or not sure how to feel, this conversation is for all of us who care about the future of Salem.
There are many who have responded to this petition's organized action by questioning the motivation of this petition and speaking to the potential harm it could cause to an institution so many of us love and support.
First, I want to reiterate again what has already been said in narrative of this petition: "Those who sign this do not sign it out of a hatred for Salem... but rather a love for [Salem.]" People are writing emails, making calls, and signing petitions because they care about the future of this school. We care about our beloved institution and the ways it is led and how those in our community are treated.
And to address the second point, I would not assume that those who have signed are not aware that this petition could bring harm to Salem College. Rather, I would invite you to think about how gravely concerned the extended Salem community is to take such bold action. This petition is not the work of a single person; it is the call of a community who is fighting for the heart of the institution that we love. If we are calling for major action, it is because we firmly believe that a major action is called for in these circumstances.
We want Salem to be alive and well. We want Salem to have another bold 250 years. But we are not willing to sacrifice the heart and the values of our institution.
Salem College and the Board of Trustees: This petition is what we have brought to the table, and we are hopeful to see what you bring in return.
