I COULDN'T SLEEP ALL NIGHT!!! AHMETÇE, THE ROCKS WERE BLAZING… THE TREES, ANIMALS, INSECTS, PLANTS…
Every summer we watch the same scene: a spark turns into a fire that spreads across thousands of hectares of forest within seconds. One of the sources of that spark is the high-voltage power lines running over the treetops.
Fires caused by power lines make up only about 4 percent of all fires in number, but they are responsible for around 20 percent of the total burned area. In other words, line-caused fires are rare but disproportionately destructive: they usually break out on windy, dry, high-risk days, grow rapidly, and reduce vast areas to ash.
Yet there is a solution that would largely eliminate this risk: burying the lines that run over forests underground. And the regions of the world that fight wildfires the most are already doing this.
Countries like the US and Australia are burying power lines underground in high fire-risk areas and setting up early-warning systems for potential faults and fires.
AN OPEN CALL TO UEDAŞ'S INVESTMENT COMPANY ACTIS AND TO EMRA:
- High-voltage lines running through forested areas and areas adjacent to forests should be moved underground within a set timeline; this should be made a mandatory item in distribution companies' investment plans.
- EPDK should audit whether companies are carrying out regular maintenance on the lines. Where a line is found to have caused a fire due to neglected maintenance, a judicial investigation should be launched against the responsible company executives, and the results should be shared with the public.
- Electricity distribution companies should be required to install early fire-warning systems along their line routes.
- Every distribution company should form specially equipped emergency response teams, able to reach the field quickly, for the forested areas within their zone of responsibility.
Let's not entrust our forests and everyone living in them to a neglected cable and to institutions headquartered abroad that approach our country with a colonial mindset.
