WE THE PEOPLE OF LEE COUNTY ARE DEMANDING THE COUNTY COMMISSIONER'S HELP!
The Issue
Petition for Humane Solutions to Euthanasia Practices in Lee County
The Issue:
As an animal advocate and lifelong animal lover, it pains me to see the unnecessary and cruel euthanasia practices within Lee County’s Domestic Animal Services. Unfortunately, my story is not unique. Every day, animals are subjected to harsh conditions, and too many are euthanized without even being given a chance for rescue, fostering, or adoption. This has to change.
The Lee County Domestic Animal Services facility is often overcrowded with strays, rescues, and surrendered animals. While overcrowding is a persistent problem, the root issue lies in the failure to provide these animals with the opportunities they deserve. Many animals, whether they are fearful, food-aggressive, or simply scared in a shelter environment, are euthanized without a proper evaluation or a chance to be rescued. This practice is not only heartbreaking but is also an unacceptable and inhumane solution.
Our Demands:
We are calling on the Lee County commissioners and county managers to take immediate action to implement humane alternatives to euthanasia. These solutions include, but are not limited to:
1 Extended Adoption Hours: Provide longer adoption hours so that animals can be seen by a wider pool of potential adopters, fostering a greater chance for them to find forever homes.
2 Improved Animal Assessments and Evaluations: Ensure that all animals are properly assessed, with comprehensive evaluations to better understand behavior and suitability for rescue or adoption.
3 Increased Facility Space: Build a larger, more modern facility with better resources and more room for the animals. This will reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions for the animals in care.
4 Enhanced Outreach and Education Programs: Expand outreach efforts to encourage responsible pet ownership, including mandatory spaying and neutering, and a crackdown on backyard breeding. Also, support TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs to address the growing feral cat population.
5 Comprehensive No-Kill Policies:Develop and enforce policies that reduce the need for euthanasia, ensuring that every animal has the opportunity for a second chance, whether through rescue, fostering, or adoption.
6 Accountability for Euthanasia Rates: Take responsibility for the current high euthanasia rates, which are projected to reach over 1,400 cats this year alone, and work to implement solutions to significantly reduce these numbers.
We’ve Done Our Part:
We have made countless attempts to engage with Lee County officials through phone calls, emails, meetings, and petitions. Despite these efforts, there has been little to no meaningful action taken to address the problem. The time for empty promises and inaction is over. We are ready and willing to work collaboratively with the county to bring about lasting change, but we need our leaders to step up and take responsibility.
The Call to Action:
It’s time for Lee County to implement compassionate, humane solutions that prioritize the well-being of animals over convenience. By signing this petition, you are urging the commissioners and county managers to take immediate and decisive action to reduce euthanasia and create a better future for the animals in our community.
Together, we can make a difference. Let’s work together to save these innocent lives.
