Through paying a small, $20 opt-out contribution each semester, we will combine our collective generosity in order to provide Bates financial support for our sustainable pursuits. The Sustainability Fund will allow those in the Bates community who are passionate about people, the planet, and prosperity to plan and propose sustainability related projects for implementation on campus. As students attending a forward thinking school aiming to cultivate informed civic action, we wish to stand behind Bates and support its commitment to responsible stewardship for the wider world. We believe the implementation of a student-funded Sustainability Fund will help Bates carry out its mission, thereby truly making our school a college for coming times.

Projects that could be made possible with the Sustainability Fund include:

1.) Solar panels for houses on Frye St.

2.) Exercise bikes in the gym that generate electricity

3.) Standardizing all recycling and trash bins around campus

4.) Wood pellet burners to replace oil and natural gas energy sources

5.) On-campus bottle redemption machine (get $$$ to deposit cans and bottles!)

6.) Motion sensor lights for student dorms and academic buildings
