The Issue

Tompkins Avenue is filled with an array of diverse businesses, offering a wide range of goods and services; from wellness and self-care to food, fashion, essentials and much more. Making this a community gem and budding NYC destination!

On Sundays throughout the summer and early fall from Noon - 6pm, Tompkins Ave is  closed to traffic from Gates to Hancock Ave, through the city's Open Streets initiative.

New York City’s Open Streets program transforms streets into public space open to all. These transformations allow for a range of activities that promote economic development and provide new ways for New Yorkers to enjoy cultural programming and build community.

Sundays are special here!

Though diverse in its make up of residents, one of the aspects that makes Tompkins so unique is its concentration of Black-Owned businesses and black ownership in general. On Sundays the uniqueness of that fact is on full display! We gather with our neighbors, make connections, support the community and the bevy of businesses partaking in our Open Streets. From children's activities to delicious food, music, dancing, games, connecting with local community organizations and beyond. Tompkins Avenue is filled with joy!

There has been some push-back to open streets citywide in general, but here a forceful minority seeks to see the ending of Open Streets on Tompkins Ave. Thus far requested and needed changes have been made to ensure this is a safe and fun filled community activation, yet the small delegation that seeks to end our Open Streets program remain steadfast in their efforts.

We believe that Open Streets on Tompkins Ave is an asset to the community as a whole and is a welcomed and appreciated community initiative that should continue. If you agree please show your support by signing and sharing this petition so that your voice can be heard!

Weather permitting, there are 8 more Open Street celebrations on Tompkins Avenue this year and we look forward to coming together for them!
