COVID-19: Petition against Racism in Britain- chose Unity over Fear and Hatred

During this coronavirus pandemic, say no to racism in all its forms.

We are deeply disturbed by the recent rise in hate crimes, abuse and attacks because of COVID19 fears- especially those directed at the British East Asian Community (Chinese, East and South East) living, working and studying in the UK. Across Britain we have seen racist attacks against innocent, ordinary members of the public.  People have been violently attacked on the street, abused on public transport, spat on, children attacked at schools and more. There has been racist graffiti scrawled outside Takeaways and people pursued up our High Streets, abused, and told to go home.

There have been at least 267 recorded instances by the police in the first three months of 2020, compared to 375 hate crimes throughout the whole of 2019 and 360 offences in 2018. These figures are likely under-estimates as the police acknowledge there is likely to be considerable under-reporting.

We stand agaist Racism in Britain and are calling for our political and public leaders to lead by example and unequivocally condemn this COVID19 related racism. Racial abuse, in any form, needs to be condemned by a united voice from us all saying this is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. We are all worried about COVID19 but to allow that fear to turn into hatred is not right.

This petition will be sent to the Prime Minister calling for a clear declaration that the British Government stands against hate crime against British Chinese and East Asian heritage people in our Country.

This petition is launched by CARG- COVID19 Anti- Racism Group formed by concerned British  citizens and community leaders following an open letter and echoes a petition in Australia.
