We need Proper and Genuine Consultation for the Camberwell Junction Activity Centre

The issue

Life is Changing in Camberwell, Is it for the better?

As a Camberwell local, I am alarmed by the changes that threaten our heritage and our lifestyle. The Allan Government's new definition of the Camberwell Junction Activity Centre opens the door for high-density housing in our neighbourhood. This change ignores our infrastructure needs, our heritage values, and our community voice.

Our schools are already full, and more people means more pressure on our education system. Our roads, trains, and trams are not ready for a population boom. And our heritage buildings and streetscapes are at risk of being destroyed by developers. The government has not listened to us or consulted us properly about these changes.

I urge our state government to stop the current Activity Centre consultation process. Instead, they need to start again with a genuine community engagement strategy; one that respects our views, addresses our concerns, and explores all the options before making decisions that affect our future. It is time to make sure the future of Camberwell is decided by us, not by bureaucrats.

Key Impacts on our community

  1. Fast-Tracked Approval Process by the Department of Planning: The expedited process bypasses standard review times.
  2. City of Boroondara’s Involvement Removed: The local council no longer participates in the planning process.
  3. Lack of Community Input: Residents lose opportunities to voice their opinions.
  4. Erosion of Community Fabric: The unique character and cohesion of our community are at risk.

Sign this petition to demand a pause and a review of the Camberwell Junction Activity Centre's definition. Together, we can protect our unique community.

New Proposed Zone in the Purple Area.

Camberwell Junction Activity Planning Centre - August 2024 update

Consultation Process to Date

  1. The City of Boroondara had completed extensive consultation over a 2.5yr period concerning the Blue Zone.
  2. Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) has only relied upon the consultation completed by council. DTP decided not complete any Initial Community Listening posts.
  3. DTP conducted there first Activity Centre community reference group (CRG) on 7th May 2024
  4. Department of Planning is conducting their next and last reference group session on 5th September 2024.
  5. DTPs Activity Centre Standing Advisory Committee will not hold public hearings as they see an urgent need to rush this process; and Implement promptly.

There has been no consultation through any mechanism via the community, CRG and Council for the 10 minute walk extension. Only the Blue Zone has been consulted on over the last 3yrs.
