We need a New Animal Shelter now!

The Issue

I am petitioning the Township of Uxbridge in Ontario, Canada to make the building of the New Animal Shelter for Uxbridge/Scugog a priority now and to ensure that whatever is needed to make this facility a reality in the very near future is done.

Since 2011, there has been an amazing group of dedicated volunteers, donors and community members raising money for a new animal shelter for Uxbridge/Scugog in the Region of Durham (including our young children donating their birthday money).  They raised over $700,000 towards this desperately needed project.

The project has been inexplicitly stalled for a number of years now seemingly by the Town of Uxbridge.  No progress has been made on it and no genuinely transparent reasons are given for the lack of any action at all toward the building of a new Shelter or the obtaining of a newer facility.  The Council of the Township of Uxbridge simply indicates that the total original budget is insufficient and has declared the build delayed indefinitely.

It is not surprising that the cost has grown over the years.  However, in spite of that, building plans can be altered and/or redone to reflect the present economy and other options can be looked at and researched.  It seems like the Town of Uxbridge wants to bury the whole issue and forget about the thousands of volunteer fund-raising hours that went into raising $700,000 in a small community.

Over 350 Direct Dedicated Volunteers

Over 500 Community Events

Over 25,000 volunteer hours

Over $700,00 contributed by people and businesses who realize the importance of improving animal care in Uxbridge/Scugog and the Region of Durham

I am also petitioning that a Low Cost, High Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic be incorporated within the new shelter building.  This clinic is to be made accessible to the animals of financially marginalized people in all of Uxbridge/Scugog and the entire Region of Durham.

The need to provide Low Cost Spay/Neuter services in the Region has increased dramatically over the past three years and the suffering of unwanted animals has become unacceptable for any caring community.

Please check out Build Our Shelter https:www.facebook.com/buildourshelter for more information on this project that so many people worked so hard to raise money for.  A project that now sits on a shelf somewhere while the animals in Uxbridge/Scugog suffer.

The above photo is a photo of the back of the old Uxbridge/Scugog Animal Shelter as it looked today.  The front of the shelter is more respectable looking but this is the back of the old shelter building.  As everyone can see from this photo it is way past time for a New Animal Shelter for Uxbridge/Scugog.
