The Issue

Citizens of Jonesboro,

Every day, as I head to work, I pass by a woman tucked into the woods nearby, utilizing whatever scant protection she can find for herself and her dogs against the elements. This sight is a harsh reminder of the severe and urgent need for a homeless shelter in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Despite her circumstances, she represents the resilience and strength of many people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves without a home.

The issue of homelessness in Jonesboro is not isolated to this one individual. According to local reports, the number of homeless individuals in our area is growing, with many seeking refuge in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The absence of a dedicated shelter means that too many of our community members are left to fend for themselves, without access to basic needs such as sanitation, warmth, and safety and the one tiny shelter we do have, does not allow their animals.

Creating a homeless shelter would provide a sanctuary for those in need, offering not only a place to sleep but access to essential services like meals, hygiene facilities, and support programs aimed at helping them transition to stable housing and employment. Many towns grappling with similar issues have benefited profoundly from establishing community shelters, and there is no reason why Jonesboro shouldn't be next.

Financially, the investment in a shelter could be offset by reduced costs in emergency services and healthcare currently being spent on the homeless population. It's an investment in our community's future, ensuring safety and dignity for all of its residents.

I urge the city council of Jonesboro, local businesses, and compassionate citizens to come together and support this initiative. Your signature can make a difference in turning this vision into reality. Please stand with us in advocating for the creation of a shelter, where the vulnerable can find a safe, supportive environment for themselves and their pets.

We have used money for sidewalks, pools and parks and have had scandals such as the City Stars program.  Let's turn Jonesboro back to a positive note and make this happen.  Sign this petition today and help us pave the path to a kinder, more inclusive community for everyone.
