Hello Supporters,

While the future of the VAC is still pending (the Park Board’s request to City Council for the $22m shortfall has not yet been heard), Park Board Commissioner Virdi will be bringing his motion, Think50m, for a 50m pool in South Vancouver to the Park Board on Monday, June 2 for a second time. The motion includes a pledge of federal funding for this pool.

Commissioner Virdi first made this motion on April 14, when it was voted down by Commissioners Christensen, Jensen, Digby, and Bastyovansky.

Our goal still is for a 50m renewal of the VAC; however, given the lack of pool facilities in the City of Vancouver, and the number of “end-of-life” pools (Kerrisdale, Templeton, Lord Byng, Kitsilano, Britannia, 50m VAC) and pool projects (Marpole, Mount Pleasant, Connaught) identified in VanSplash the  deliveries of which have been either shelved or delayed, we champion the building of 50m pools anywhere in the City.

The Commissioners should be reminded that while this South Vancouver 50m pool was not identified in VanSplash, a priority in VanSplash was “to replace VAC with a new large scale pool”. They have chosen to disregard the plebiscite voters (103,000), petition signatories (15,600), and the community consulted during VanSplash, in favour of building a smaller lap pool at VAC with a recreational emphasis at a huge cost.
