We Must Save the Seven
The Issue
To the Youth of Somalia and All Patriotic Citizens,
Somalia is under threat — our sovereignty, our territorial integrity and most importantly, our oceans are under siege from hostile nations. The MOU signed recently, and the purported discussions held in that meeting, to the contrary reveal a common factor: utter disregrad for the legitimate borders and resources of Somalia. Ethiopia, and it is positioned at such an angle that straightforwardly challenges our nation’s sovereignty, and the particulars of this approach is no different from previous attempts by other nations, like Kenya, to exploit our waters.
On Dec 11, 2024, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan stood beside Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed at a press conference in Ankara, Turkey, in a now widely shared image. Framed as diplomacy, this moment has sent shockwaves of outrage and bewilderment through the Somali people. How can we make sense of such displays of indifference when there are still persistent threats to our territorial integrity? It is difficult to view this as anything other than an extension of efforts to legitimize Ethiopia’s claim over the ocean ports of Somalia — claims that openly challenge our sovereignty.
When we talk about saving the Seven, we mean more than geography. Our country—with all its beauty—looks like a Joshimath now, like a one-legged seahorse, and we cannot let it break. Save the Seven and save the Somalia that was always meant to be because this Somalia belongs to every Somali child, boy and girl, who will inherit this nation.
The image of Ethiopian official Aisha Mohammed Mussa standing on Somalia’s coast alongside the caption “No caption needed” is not merely a photo; it is a statement. This is an affront to our sovereignty, a declaration of intent to seize what belongs to us. This cannot stand.
We urge the Somali youth to step up. The moment has come to stand united as one people, to discard disparate tribes and political factions. Our nation needs us, and our future is compelling us to act.
We must demand the following:
Respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including land, air, and waters.
Our demand for immediate public disclosure and accountability by the Federal Republic of Somalia on all agreements and negotiations about our borders and resources.
Categorical rejection of any MOU or agreements that compromise Somalia’s territorial rights, particularly deals concerning our ocean ports.
Somalia’s oceans are not a bargaining chip. They are a lifeline, a source of sustenance and pride, and a sacred trust for all Somali citizens. We must defend our oceans, our land and our air from anyone who tries to take it.
Somalia’s youth, this is our rallying cry. We need to save the Seven — our land, our seas, our sovereignty. This is precisely why, if we do not stand together now, we risk losing what makes Somalia strong, proud, and independent. Let us set aside differences and come together for the sake of our country and its citizens.
