Should the Chief Executive of Tauranga City Council resign?

On 22 January 2026, six people tragically lost their lives in the landslide at the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park.

The independent External Review by Hon. Paul Davison KSO KC found that Tauranga City Council missed several opportunities to evacuate the affected area of the campground.

The Review also found that two separate geotechnical consultants had recommended the development of a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) to manage the landslide risk at the campground, but neither recommendation had been implemented by the time of the tragedy.

The Review described this as “a systemic failure with tragic consequences.”

These findings raise an important question about leadership and accountability within Tauranga City Council.
