We MUST establish a National Domestic Violence Registry
The Issue
All people deserve the right to know if someone they're considering starting a relationship with has been convicted of domestic violence or related crimes such as stalking/assault, or if there is an active protection order against them. Just like the public is informed about registered sex offenders, there should be similar transparency regarding domestic violence offenders.
I do not have the luxury of revealing my true identity or location for fear of my abuser. I hope you nor your loved ones ever know this pain. Had there been a registry, I would surely have known about my abuser's previous crimes. All of us deserve the opportunity to know...
Domestic violence is a grave issue, impacting millions of individuals and families across the United States. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women and one in ten men are victims of intimate partner violence, often leading to severe physical and psychological consequences. That is what is estimated...it is rumored to be far worse.
A national registry would serve as a crucial preventive tool, empowering individuals with the knowledge to make safer relationship choices.
Establishing a national domestic violence registry would provide citizens with access to verifiable information, much like the current sex offender registry. This would involve a comprehensive database maintained at a federal level, ensuring that repeat offenders are easily identifiable regardless of state lines. It could include information on convictions related to domestic violence, stalking, and status/violations of protective orders. Such transparency can enhance public safety and can SAVE LIVES!
This initiative would not only protect potential victims but also act as a deterrent for potential perpetrators, as the awareness of a public registry could discourage repeat offenses.
For implementation, Congress should legislate to require states to report necessary data, provide resources for maintaining the database, and safeguard privacy rights while ensuring public awareness.
I am calling for immediate action!
Let us urge our lawmakers to create a national domestic violence registry by having our voices heard. We owe it to the countless victims and future generations to ensure they have this information. Please join me in signing this petition to demand the establishment of a national domestic violence registry.
