Turkey should not surrender to the climate crisis!

We are facing a crisis that threatens our entire existence. Drought, which threatens access to clean water and food, is increasing every year. We witness floods that kill thousands of people, seasons that have been destabilized, and deaths due to heat waves.

It's called the climate crisis and Turkey is one of the countries most threatened by it the most. Turkey, like all other countries, must do its part to combat it. It should attend COP27 (Global Climate Summit), which will be held in Egypt in November, setting a goal of " 35% absolute reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030" and making a roadmap towards this goal.

Turkey is one of the most vulnerable countries in Europe and also the 14th highest carbon emitter in the world. Therefore, Turkey has a great responsibility.

If it doesn’t take sufficient action, by 2050 Turkey could suffer, according to the latest IPCC report data:

  • A temperature increase of 2.3 degrees (which could mean an increase in the average temperature of some provinces by 5-10 degrees)
  • Deaths due to heat waves
  • Flooding of coastal cities such as Antalya and Muğla, including Izmir and Istanbul
  • Difficult and expensive access to clean water and food due to drought
  • Additional serious problems await, due to the fact that half of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean region will face water scarcity

The way to prevent these impacts, is to reduce the carbon emissions that cause this crisis.

Limiting the world's average temperature increase to below 1.5 degrees is a "survival" threshold for humans and all living things. Even in the not-too-distant future, for life as we know it to continue; we have to bring the global emissions that cause the climate crisis to net zero.

Turkey took important steps to combat the climate crisis in 2021: We approved the Paris Agreement, which aims to prevent the climate crisis and keep the global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. We also set a goal of being carbon neutral by 2053.

However, the roadmap, meaning which policies and intermediate targets will be achieved by our country to achieve this goal, is uncertain.

That's why the 2030 absolute emission reduction target is a milestone on the road to carbon neutrality by 2053. We expect our country to take responsibility by COP27 and create a roadmap to cut absolute greenhouse gas emissions by  35% until 2030 .
