We Deserve Bernie!
The Issue
We are asking that Senator Sanders continue his campaign for the Democratic nomination, personally and politically difficult as we know this step will be. At this moment of crisis, we need not only Bernie’s leadership, but the focus and mass-mobilization of the Sanders 2020 campaign to move the nation forward. Our own commitment, and our gratitude, will be demonstrated by fulfilling the following promise: We will run with you, Bernie, all the way to Milwaukee, and beyond.
* Bernie Sanders' run for president has changed my life for the better in more ways than I can easily list. It has given me a purpose, a community, and the means to act on the former by building the latter. It has connected my highest aspirations to my everyday activities, and brought me into the company of others who have been shaken out of their disbelief and disengagement by a movement that has grown too strong to be dismissed. This campaign has begun a new chapter in my life, and in the life of my country, and for that I will always be grateful to Senator Sanders and his supporters.
My gratitude, and my commitment to doing the new work to which I've been called, are not conditioned on Bernie winning the Democrats' primary, or any other electoral contest. They are matters of principle, not politics. Bernie is not my candidate, he is my leader. He has earned that position not in the usual political way, by force of personality or the accrual of power, but by his embodiment of the highest ideals of public service over a lifetime of hard and often thankless work.
The need to elevate true leadership over the petty pragmatics of our political process has come into stark, terrifying focus in the days since the nation belatedly awakened to the profound danger posed by COVID-19. The threat to our very lives posed by the virus is matched only by the economic calamity toward which we are hurtling. While the political leadership of both parties, presumptive presidential nominees included, has either prevaricated about the troubles ahead or simply lapsed into a pensive silence, Senator Sanders has leapt into action, immediately turning his campaign infrastructure into a powerful extra-governmental aid organization that in a matter of days has raised over $2 million for vulnerable Americans, and is lobbying Congress to enact the strongest possible protective measures at the Federal level.
It is as the leader of a movement, and an embodiment of our aspirations, that I believe Senator Sanders should continue the work of running in the Democrats’ primary. It is my sincere hope that the nature of the times may, in the weeks to come, give him the path to victory that was difficult to discern only a few days ago. Regardless, it is my conviction that the people in this movement, indeed the nation itself and the world as a whole, need not only Bernie’s leadership, which he has never hesitated to provide, but a Sanders candidacy to carry forward the plain-dealing and practical message of hope and companionship that is our only way forward in the dark times ahead.
