We demand a development that's right for Peckham and its people

The Issue

New plans will soon be submitted for a massive redevelopment of the Aylesham Centre in Peckham. 14 new buildings of up to 20 storeys are proposed for the site - despite opposition to previous similar schemes, and community awareness remains low.

The current proposal doesn’t fit, won’t work and must change.

Peckham’s communities have not been adequately listened to throughout the process. We support development of the site but the latest scheme contains the same issues as the previous, widely rejected plan.

A more imaginative approach is possible. We demand that the developer (Berkeley Homes) and Southwark Council:

  • Create communities not just housing units. Provide at least 50% social housing, quality open green space, and buildings that are sustainable and affordable to live in. Protect the shops and services local people rely on, and enhance what already makes Peckham special, attracts visitors and jobs
  • Massively increase communication to people in all our communities. Hold well-advertised public meetings that enable views to be shared on what the right type of development is for Peckham

This will radically change Peckham's Town Centre – it must meet local people’s needs, not just planning requirements.
