The Issue

My name is Leo, and like millions of others across the UK, I am an unpaid carer.
I didn’t choose this role — I stepped into it because someone I love needed me.

Every day, carers like me lift, wash, feed, comfort, advocate, organise medication, fight for appointments, and hold families together. We do it out of love, not for money.

But right now, thousands of carers are living in fear.

  • Fear of letters demanding thousands of pounds.
  • Fear of debt collectors.
  • Fear of prosecution.
  • Fear that one small mistake — often caused by unclear rules or confusing guidance — could destroy everything.

These carers are not criminals.
They are parents, partners, children, neighbours, and friends doing their best in impossible circumstances.

The Government commissioned the Sayce Review because the system is broken.
The review made clear, compassionate, evidence‑based recommendations to fix it.
But carers are still being punished under the old, flawed system — a system already acknowledged as unjust.

This must stop.

We call on the UK Government to take urgent action:

1. Implement all recommendations of the Sayce Review immediately.

Carers cannot wait months or years for fairness.

2. Halt all enforcement, overpayment recovery, and punitive action against carers until reassessments are completed under the new rules.

No one should be punished under a system already acknowledged as flawed.

3. Ensure reassessments are fair, transparent, and based on clear, accessible guidance.

Carers deserve clarity, not confusion. Support, not fear.

Why this matters

Behind every statistic is a story.

  • A mother caring for her disabled son who receives a letter demanding £9,000.
  • A husband caring for his wife with dementia who is threatened with court action.
  • A young carer juggling college and caring who is told she owes money she never knew she was “overpaid.”

These are real people.
Real families.
Real lives being pushed to breaking point.

Carers save the UK billions every year.
They keep the health and social care system afloat.
They deserve dignity, fairness, and protection — not punishment.

What we are asking for

We urge the Government to:

  • act now
  • protect carers
  • restore trust
  • build a system that recognises the humanity and value of unpaid carers
  • Please sign and share this petition.

Stand with carers. |Stand for fairness. |Stand for change.
