We care about our ABC

The issue

Our politicians have forgotten how important our ABC is to us.

Constant funding cuts are placing the very existence of our ABC at risk. While the ABC is trying valiantly to deliver services to metro, regional and local communities, it is continually being forced to cut back further.

By the time we go to the polls on July 2, the ABC will have lost more than $100 million in funding a year!

Forced funding cuts have cost 500 jobs and, with the further $48 million reduction listed in the May budget, this will certainly affect the quality and range of programming the ABC can offer in news coverage and other areas including drama and children's, as well as mobile and online.

The time has come. Help us tell our politicians we care about the future of our ABC. Because if we are not careful, we run the risk of losing it at some point forever.

The petition will be sent to key political figures so that they know that we care about our ABC and its future.

The Decision Makers

Responded
Strengthening ABC should be as easy as 1, 2, 3. I pledge to use our numbers in the new parliament to push for greater funding for the ABC, as well as ensuring regional content, and a restoration of the ABC’s Fact Check. I introduced a Bill following budget cuts in 2014 which saw the ABC axe local production in Adelaide as well as the state based editions of the 7.30 Report but it was not supported by the major parties. The Nick Xenophon Team is proposing amendments to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 which will ensure: 1. A ten year funding model for the ABC rather than the current triennial funding model; 2. Restoring ABC cuts made in the 2014 budget, coupled with a requirement for regional content in states such as SA; 3. Restoring the ABC’s Fact Check program which is set to be axed after the election. https://www.facebook.com/Sen.Nick.Xenophon/photos/a.1647385638811641.1073741828.1647382662145272/1715985671951637/?type=3&theater
