A Ban on Horse Drawn Carriages in Manhattan New York
The Issue
Last week I traveled with a friend to Manhattan New York, to see the sites, it was brilliant.. on our second to last day we decided to go to Central Park. This is when I discovered the horses of Manhattan it was 36 degrees which is pretty hot, I have horses at home and to be honest think its quite cruel to exercise them in 26 Degrees! After all I wouldn't want to be running around in the hot weather myself so why should my horses! At this point I only managed a glance as we was going in the opposite direction, I did notice these carriages are almost wedding carriages, they are huge. they need at least two horses in my opinion to pull one, they struggle with just the carriages let alone pulling 8 tourists at a time as well as the driver! Later that evening we went to Time Square one of the busiest places I have ever seen in my entire life. Imagine, Heat, Thousands of people, Cars, Taxis, Buses, NYPD Sirens, Bikes, Motorbikes, Firetrucks and lorries all crammed into Time Square along with the horses, rows of them, all looking completely fed up. At nearly 1am, we were heading home after visiting the shops in the area, so.... brave me went over to speak to a man who was waiting for passengers on his horse drawn carriage, bearing in mind I had seen this horse 12 hours earlier working hard in 36 degree heat. I think he thought I wanted a ride but, being me I needed to know about the horses of Manhattan.. I asked " Hi, How long do your horses work for each day?" He said " At least 9 hours" I was astonished at least 9 hours in this heat, another question flew out of my mouth " how many days does he work?" he replied "Everyday". So I said "wheres his food and water" the man pointed to a bucket of Molasses - It is the syrup that is left over from the sugar production out of sugar cane or sugar beet. Molasses is used a lot in horse feeds. Molasses contains 50% sugar. - This was pure molasses soaked in water. This was basically how they keep their energy up and water intake. They may as well just feed them Red Bull.. I asked where does this horse rest.. He said "Hes tied up at my home" Tears began to fill my eyes, Where is the grass in Manhattan?! THERE IS NONE! This horse looked sorry, old, tired and completely drained, he was clean and his shoes looked good, but this horses body looked like a body of a 30 year old horse, I have had horses all my life and with a sneaky rub of his nose and a pull down of his lip, I saw his teeth, this horses teeth looked to me to be around 9-10 years old.. The tears just flooded down my face, to think there was nothing I could do for this horse, I was going home the next day and It has been on my mind every since. He then said " What do you know about horses anyway, this is my job, if he dies ill get another" I was in America and every part of me wanted to loose it with him but I couldn't, I simply looked at him and said "How you are treating this animal is disgusting" He said "I need to earn money" I walked off to my hotel and have made it my mission to make it known, if I can just help one horse out there with your help I will be eternally grateful and im sure those beautiful animals will be too.
