Within months the State Government may shut down Moort Boodjari Mia (MBM). This is the only Aboriginal led midwifery service left in Western Australia. There is still time for us to stop them.
MBM has demonstrated outstanding achievements, providing a much needed culturally safe, holistic, antenatal and postnatal maternity service for Aboriginal women and their families. The service’s outstanding record has been recognised by winning the National HESTA Team Excellence Award (2013) and runner up in the National Lead Clinicians Award (2014).
Continuing MBM is no gamble! Funding this program is an investment into the health and wellbeing of families today and into the future. This program is changing the health of Aboriginal people for generations to come. It’s a smart investment! We need your help to make sure Moort Boodjari Mia doesn't close!
MBM is an accredited service working with the most disadvantaged women in Australia. It has provided exceptional service to over 200 Aboriginal mothers (with over 80% deemed high risk) since 2011. Against any measures Moort Boodjari Mia has been punching well above its weight. The service works and is effective because it has been developed by the local Aboriginal community. MBM has been proven to deliver healthier babies to stronger more confident Aboriginal mothers and fathers, with increased health knowledge and most importantly hope for a brighter future for all Aboriginal people.
The State Government consistently promises to Close The Gap, but instead it is Closing the Door on a proven solution for Aboriginal babies and families.
As of 1st July MBMs doors are scheduled to close permanently. This will be a huge loss not only to Aboriginal families and communities, but to the wider Australian community.
