We are Virginia Wairimu - Let her stay!

The Issue

I am Virginia Wairimu and I fled my country of Kenya due to a real and present threat to my life. My sexuality, something that I tried to hide and be discreet about, was made public against my will. This led to me being physically attacked, and threatened, which ultimately forced me to leave behind my home, family, and friends. Now, I am in the UK hoping to start rebuilding my life.

Sexual orientation is a protected ground for asylum applications under international law, and various bodies, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, have recognised the extreme threats lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals face in many parts of the world. Recent figures show that the Home Office UK grants asylum to less than 20% of applicants, making the process for legitimate seekers difficult and uncertain.

My asylum applications to stay in the country have been unsuccessful due to the Home Office stating they didn't believe I am a lesbian and then suggesting I could return to my country and be discreet. I should not have to hide who I am out of fear.

Therefore I need your support to be safe in the UK. Your signature will show that you believe I am a refugee and I do need protection. This is about my life and my human rights — yours could be the voice that makes all the difference. Please, sign this petition.
