We are urging the US government and cloud technology business leaders to restrict the use of American cloud infrastructure by Russian enterprises.

Existing sanctions against Russia for its brutal aggression against Ukraine don’t go far enough. While some economic proposals target its oil and financial industries, no proposals exist today to target their technology sector.

American cloud service providers like Amazon and Cloudflare serve an outsized portion of global internet traffic. They are essential for supporting large-scale enterprises like Netflix, Siemens, and Discover.

At a minimum, we request that Russian companies be prohibited from purchasing cloud services from the following companies:

Cloud server hosting:

• Amazon Web Services
• Microsoft Azure
• Google Cloud

Networking, content-delivery-networks:

• Cloudflare
• Fastly
• Akamai
• Palo Alto Networks
• Layer 5 Networks
• Cisco

This is not an exhaustive list but it represents the largest market participants. Blocking Russia from these companies will enact a significant cost to the Russian technology sector.
