Save Glen Iosal!
The Issue
The Health and Social Care Partnership at Argyll and Bute Council have withdrawn funding to the Trust Housing Association. So Trust Housing have to drastically cut warden provision which means they will no longer provide supported living for the infirm and vulnerable at Glen Iosal in Tobermory.
They expect Social Work to pick up the slack and provide Home Care with home visits. SOCIAL WORK ON MULL DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH STAFF TO DO THIS!
As of April 2018, Glen Iosal will be rebranded as 'Retirement Living'. Leaving Mull with no fully supported Sheltered Accommodation.
We have many physically and mentally infirm and vulnerable people who live on Mull who need, or may need, suported living. The Council cannot wash their hands of this problem by saying it is up to Trust Housing to provide this. There is no alternative on Mull.
We raised money for Bowman Court because we thought that was going to offer Supported Living but it is not what we expected. It is independent living with Home Care visits. The vulnerable will suffer if Glen Iosal cannot offer shelter as they will have to travel to Nursing or Residential Homes on the Mainland (and the ones in Oban are usually full, with a waiting list).
The warden at Glen Iosal currently offers a fantastic package of compassionate care (even when she is off duty, she has been ready and willing to change an incontinence pad or sit for hours, in the middle of the night, with a terrified resident waiting for an ambulance). Her reward for such care is to have her hours and pay cut by nearly a third. Other members of staff are being made redundant.
This is unacceptable. The Council must provide Sheltered Accommodation on Mull. The easiest way is for them to withdraw their decision to cut funding to Trust Housing. It is only roughly £20,000 for Glen Iosal and £76,000 across the county. Come on Argyll and Bute (and NHS) do your duty!
It will cost the tax payer far more money once this cut is made to Glen Iosal as evidence shows that if care is withdrawn, residents will deteriorate from Priority 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 pretty rapidly.
