We are asking Rentokil to remove the lethal trap for pigeons immediately!!!
The issue
BACK GROUND:
We were informed that last week a few pigeons stuck inside FoodLand at Athelstone shopping centre and to remove them, the FoodLand hired Rentokil company.
People demanded FoodLand to remove them alive without killing them. Rentokil attempted to remove them by net, but it was unsuccessful. Following that, they removed them by different lethal methods.
That still was not enough neither for FoodLand, nor Rentokil and they decided to put trap on the roof of the building for the pigeons outside the building. The trap with seeds inside is open for awhile (Pre seeds stage) until it gets trust of pigeons and then will be one way trap, it means when they go inside, they can't come out and then their heads will be twisted by pest control agents and their body will be disposed and again trap will be open for next pigeons. It might be legal to do that, but it's extremely inhumane, many of them have babies outside and babies will die due to dehydration and hunger.
The problem is the FoodLand building, it is not well maintained and there are some holes and gaps on the roof that let pigeons come inside from them and also the back storage doors are usually open, that's another reason pigeons come inside and stuck inside the shopping, it's not really pigeons fault, it's the owner of the building fault to poor maintained the building. Pigeons are victims of neglecting of managements and we don’t want to see more pigeons will be destroyed.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING:
- We are demanding FoodLand to maintain the store to avoid pigeons and other birds to come inside, they must close the gaps on the roof and if they find pigeon babies and nest, should be given to the rescuers to raise.
- The doors at the storage room at the back of store is usually open, that's where birds coming into the store. FoodLand must make sure the birds can't get in from there, they must put plastic sliding doors for, if one is not enough, put two or three or change the set up of roller doors.
- WE ARE DEMANDING RENTOKIL TO REMOVE THE LETHAL TRAP ON THE ROOF IMMEDIATELY AS KILLING FREE FLYING PIGEONS ARE UNNECESSARY AND INHUMAN.
ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS:
- Nests and Babies are protected in many animal rights and welfare around the world. In Australia, they're still sealed the gaps on chicks to die of hunger and dehydration. It's so cruel. Pest controller should work closely with rescuers and vet clinics. The babies that they find on the roofs should be give to the rescuers to be raised.
- Pest controller must be given licence and permit of using anestetic gun to remove the birds that stuck in a building humanely.
- Trapping pigeons and killing them by twisting their heads or gas chamber is so cruel and unnecessary when their breeding is out of control. Pest controller should be allowed to use ovocontrol as a humanely alternative solution. If they use the facility correctly and under correct supervision, native birds wouldn't be targeted.
