Eradicating Polio By Raising Awareness

Eradicating Polio By Raising Awareness
The Issue
Polio. A life-threatening disease that is still prevalent in our societies today. And why is this the case? Well, there are a multitude of reasons why Polio remains an important issue ranging from Lack of Accessibility to Vaccines to Illiteracy about its symptoms as well as Poor Hygienic Habits. Border countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world that remain polio-endemic. Both regions remain important disruptors to each others' efforts to eradicate Polio as one country cannot completely diminish its cases if the other still has widespread cases. One aspect usually disregarded in both countries is how religious and cultural attitudes contribute to the extensive number of cases as a population study in Peshawar concluded that 79% of people did not vaccinate their children as they believed it went against their religion. This backward school of thought is detrimental to the lives of young children and cannot carry on any longer. Therefore, it is upon us to raise awareness about protecting the lives of innocents and shed light on a vital issue if we want to envision a better future. Governments will only make efforts to eradicate polio if we, as civilians, enlighten them in hopes of bringing about a change. We are a group of 5 students partaking in Cambridge International Examinations for the Global Perspectives team project. Our goal is to increase awareness about polio and eradicate it. Therefore, support us on this deeply important mission and Help us End the might of Polio's fright.
