#FreeFriday From WB - Warner Bros. Should NO LONGER own any asset of the "Friday" series!
The Issue
The first installment has been released in 1995, second in 2000, and third in 2002. Fans of the series have been clamoring for a fourth installment for many years.
Ever since Warner Bros. bought New Line Cinema, the film has been in limbo. Ice Cube had a script written in between late 2011 and late 2012, and the film got stuck in development hell. They could have started filming by 2013.
Then in 2017, there has been a new leadership, resulting in another script to be written, and it hasn't been completed until spring 2019. Production could have started towards the later part of that summer (or early fall), but according to Ice Cube and late John Witherspooon, they said that WB kept asking for rewrites back to back. Then as of October 29, 2019, we lost John Witherspoon. The movie ended up being on hold. And then we lost Tiny Lister Jr. in December 2020. As of February 2021, Ice Cube stated "#freefriday from the jaws of Warner Bros. who refuses to make more sequels. They have hi-jacked the happiness of the culture." There has been a legal battle of ownership over the summer. And then we lost AJ Johnson in September 2021.
Warner Bros. listened to fans about releasing the "Snyder Cut" of "Justice League". BUT THEY WOULDN'T LISTEN ABOUT "LAST FRIDAY"
Warner Bros. (WarnerMedia) should lose the rights just like how the Weinsteins lost the rights to "Halloween", better yet, all of their movies since their company folded.
All jokes aside, Ice Cube said in 2007 that he was trying to convince New Line Cinema to cut the check to get this movie made. It would have been out by the middle of 2008, or 2009.
The script started getting written in late 2011. Ice Cube was trying to get Chris Tucker on board. As of 2012, Tiny Lister Jr, Mike Epps, John Witherspoon, Jacob Vargas, and Terry Crews were all attached while other cast members were rumored to return. Chris Tucker didn't seem to keen to return. MovieWeb expected the release to be 2014. The script was completed by Nov. 2012. And Cube said that they were "marinating on it" a month later.
It should have been greenlit by Dec. 2012/Jan 2013., filming should have started between April-June 2013, that way the movie would have been out between Dec. 2013-April 2014.
But NOOOOOOOOOOO. Warner Bros. messed it all up. Development hell happened. It was rumored for 2015 release. It came and went.
Not to mention, Tiny Lister Jr said filming was gonna start in March 2016. If it DID start in March 2016, the film would have been in post production by May/June 2016, and it would have been released by Feb. 2017-April 2017. But Warner Bros. was TOO political.
And then when the leadership changed and Kevin Tsujihara came in, the film went back on track. Ice Cube and DJ Pooh started over from scratch with the script in 2017. Mike Epps, John Witherspoon, and Michael Blackson were all attached at the time. In 2018, the script was still being written. Ice Cube, John Witherspoon, Michael Blackson and AJ Johnson said filming was supposed to start in Nov/Dec. 2018. Mike Epps, Tiny Lister Jr and Katt Williams were attached. And Chris Tucker said he would do it if it comes together right. The film would have been released by the summer of 2019. But Ice Cube said that New Line Cinema still hasn't cut them a check.
In April 2019, Ice Cube said the script was finished, and he would like for it to be out by April 2020 to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of the first film.
Tiny Lister Jr said that filming would start in late Sept. 2019. If that was the case the movie would have been out between April-June 2020, but COVID would have caused it to be pushed back to this time period, it would have been on HBO Max right now.
In the summer of 2019, John Witherspoon said WB was telling Ice Cube to rewrite some scenes with DJ Pooh. Ice Cube said the same, and it would be out in 2020.
As soon as we got to September, production for late Sept. turned into after thanksgiving. John Witherspoon said that they were still rewriting. And filming turned into WINTER. It probably would have been released on HBO Max by this time. But then unfortunately we lost John Witherspoon in October 2019.
As of December 2019, the script went back to the drawing board.
As of mid 2020, the movie got put on hold.
As of December 2020, we lost Tiny Lister Jr.
As of February 2021, Ice Cube started a hashtag #freefriday
As of June/July 2021, Ice Cube has still been fighting for the rights.
As of September 2021, we lost AJ Johnson.
Chances of LAST FRIDAY have gotten slimmer and slimmer. To those who still think there should be more FRIDAY, feel free to sign this petition. But to those who believe it should be left alone, don't sign the petition. I might be closing this petition.
