Stand Up to the Humane Society

The Issue

In March, I called to report three dogs being abused as they were being kept in  cages much like chicken coops.  No one was living at the residence as their owners were moving in sporadically and could not fully move in until April.  At no time did they allow the dogs out to roam the fenced in yard and they were confined to these cages in the Florida weather.  It is hard to watch these animals suffer with no exercise, companionship and being caged. (You can see a black dog in the far cage.  Another black and white dog is in the middle cage and a brown dog is in the cage close to the fence.  Two cages face a closed Landscaping business and the middle faces the home).

I called our local Humane Society of Polk County, Florida about the abuses after submitting a tip.  After all, their website states the following: "Your donation in support of our Cruelty Investigation will help pets live longer and healthier. Please donate today!"  See http://humanesocietyofpolkcounty.org/educate/report-animal-cruelty/  To any reader, this suggests your donation goes towards the investigation of cruelty along with education.   (After my telephone call to them, it doesn't! I was told by a representative there that they do not investigate cruelty cases). I was further advised that I would receive a telephone call back within an hour which never happened.  I even called the local Animal Control with no success or resolution.

I continued by following up with the Florida Humane Society and Kate MacFall, Florida State Director, stated they had no jurisdictional control over the local Humane Society as they were "not affiliated with local organizations."  One would think with a National and State organizations there would be some oversight on each level.  No help there.  I learned the Humane Society is separate entities doing their own thing (conglomerate).

My last attempt was at the Humane Society of the United States.  Again, the same sad words from Alan.  No control over state or local offices. Albeit, their mission statement: "The HSUS in its mission to celebrate animals and confront cruelty."

Therefore, be it resolved, that we the undersigned hereby pledge the following:

1. The Humane Society of the United States and State Level needs to establish oversight within the organization to ensure that ALL animal cruelty cases are investigated under number #2 below.

2. Animal cruelty cases are investigated as the Humane Society claims on the websites OR such statements are removed from websites and ALL donations paid under the assumptions of animal cruelty investigations are reimbursed to donors.

3. Further advertisements for such donations cease IMMEDIATELY which is misleading at best and deceiving/fraudulent at worst making donors believe that the Humane Society IS investigating cruelty cases.

4. We will forward this petition to others to garner further support to STOP these abuses on the part of the Humane Society of the United States, the Humane Society of (your) State and local Humane Societies until we find justice for ALL ABUSED OR NEGLECTED animals and not just selected ones.
