My name is Brooke Stoneburgh, I am a senior at Waterford Mott High School and I am in a very wonderful and opportunistic program called Career Connections. With this class, I am able to go to three different hospitals throughout the span of the year. Every Monday and Thursday, our class takes a bus to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, McLaren Hospital, and Doctor's Hospital of Michigan, where we spend our first three class periods shadowing several different job positions at the hospitals. Even though we are only high school students, we are considered as staff at the hospital, patients and their families often ask us for help and questions concerning their care. Each time we go to the hospital we are assigned to different departments, ensuring we get to experience every part of a hospital atmosphere. The class instructors, Mrs. Marilyn Floyd and Mrs. Susan Keglovitz, have worked here for almost as long as I have been alive. Mrs. Floyd has been here for almost thirteen years while Mrs. Keglovitz (we call her Mrs. Kay) has been here for about thirty years. I have grown to love them as if they were my grandparents. I have taken all of the medical classes they offer, and now it has been three enlightening and exhilarating years that they have taught me. Through their classes, I was able to become certified in CPR, Oxygen Administration, Administering Epinephrine Shots, Administering an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and Basic First Aid Skills/Medical First Responder Skills through the American Red Cross. I started high school without knowing what I wanted to be when I got older, only knowing I was interested in the medical field. I based my classes around that thought and that’s how I met Mrs. Floyd & Mrs. Kay. They helped to guide me on the right path and opened my eyes to the wonderful life of helping others. The Board of Education and Superintendant of Waterford School District have taken it upon themselves to cancel ALL medical classes and the auto classes at my high school next year. Even though I am graduating and will not be here next year, I am fighting for Mott as much as I can! The school wants to keep ceramics, jewelry, drawing, painting, video pro, and choir classes while canceling the medical classes. I don’t know about you, but I would rather know how to save some one’s life than know how to make a cute necklace. Help us keep our school a nice place, we want a good education!
