Water safety in the UK
The Issue
In September of this year, the unimaginable happened: three-year-old Noah Woods tragically drowned in a pond in Brantham. A precious life was lost, leaving behind a community in mourning and devastated loved ones.
Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, particularly among young children. In the UK, drowning rates have alarmingly increased by 20.5% from 2020 to 2025. This rise underscores an urgent need for enhanced safety measures around our abundant bodies of water. Since May 2026, there have already been at least 35 recorded drowning deaths, situations that are too often a result of unsafe environments or individuals underestimating the risks of open water.
We need to act now to safeguard our communities, especially our children. I propose making it mandatory for all fishing lakes, ponds, and reservoirs within 5miles of built up areas and deeper than three feet to have secure fencing. While it is crucial to enjoy these natural resources, ensuring safety is paramount. Proper fencing can serve as a vital barrier, preventing unsupervised access and giving parents and guardians peace of mind when children are near water.
Imposing fencing requirements is not just a precaution; it is an act of responsibility that could save lives. By protecting our water bodies, we protect our families and future generations from unnecessary and devastating risk.
This petition calls upon local councils and the UK government to take this actionable step towards public safety. Let us reduce the drowning statistics, spare countless families from enduring unbearable loss, and foster a safer environment for all.
in addition to this, ages 3-16 should be entitled to mandatory swimming lessons at their local leisure centres. they should complete 20hours of swimming lessons in total to ensure they have learnt the basics of water safety. Along with those ages 16-25 with an option choice of swimming lessons with a cheap fare of £5. this ensures that everyone has a basic understanding of water safety and have an ability to swim safely and confidently
Please join me in urging our policymakers to implement mandatory fencing around water bodies and mandatory swimming lessons for children. Sign this petition and help ensure that no more lives are needlessly lost to preventable drowning accidents.
