Jack Seigel started this petition to Ask WashU officials to publicly support Close the Workhouse

St Louis is home to the notorious jail known as the Workhouse. Over 90% of people detained there are being held pre-trial, meaning they have not been found guilty of the crime for which they are being held, nor have they been granted their constitutional right of Due Process. The majority of the people there are also people of color and people of lower socioeconomic status. There have been reports of rat infestations, black mold, unsanitary food, roaches, inadequate medical care, dysfunctional bathroom facilities, and violence instigated by correctional officers.

By closing the Workhouse, St. Louis can reimagine public safety for thousands of people, focus on building communities and moving away from the failed policies of mass incarceration.

As an institutional anchor, Washington University plays an important role in the St Louis community. We have an opportunity to be on the right side of history by adding our collective voice to the growing movement of organizations endorsing the Close the Workhouse campaign. We are asking you to sign this petition and call on Chancellor Martin to issue a formal statement publicly condemning the Workhouse and advocating for the immediate release of the people held there, as well as the closure of the building. A full list of supportive organizations can be found here.

Please sign our petition to add your voice and help us create change in our WashU community.
