We are done! We -- and this includes each and every one of you who signed this petition -- have succeeded in changing the name of this waterway to honor Henry Cayou, a well-regarded member of both the indigenous and the white communities who very often traveled this channel, instead of a man who committed atrocities against our fellow humans and who never saw this channel once. The third and final state review was on July 5 by citizens sitting on the Washington State Board of the Dept of Natural Resources and Commissioner Hilary Franz, and then the Federal agencies approved it July 14 -- only 9 days later! Everybody tells us that this was extraordinarily fast, we thought we would be waiting until fall or later. This proposal has always been about respect. Respect for our fellow human beings including the indigenous people who lived in these islands for untold millennia. Respect for people of color, including those who were so horribly enslaved in our country, and respect for the agreements that the white settlers made with the First Peoples.
