Logo motif stays. New name: Americans, Warriors, Tribe or any logo-related name.
The Issue
The Washington Redskins name has been the subject of controversy for many years, but due to recent events on human equalities and anti-racism, the team is changing their name.
[update 02-2022: logo & name change to commanders is completely unacceptable to fans.]
This petition is In support of:
a) Keeping the logo honoring the Native Americans as always been the intent of the team’s point of pride.
b) Team should donate a small percentage of revenues to better the lives of Native Americans at Indian reservations.
Historical - Blackfeet Nation This photo of Blackfeet Chief Two Guns White Calf, taken around 1912, is believed to be an inspiration for both the Indian Head Nickle and the modern Washington Redskins football team logo. (Image COURTESY OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS)
Great Falls Tribune recently wrote:
“Native Americans in Montana are expressing mixed feelings about the decision. Some tribal members rejoice the team's decision to drop "Redskins" as its mascot. However, others say the logo, which has ties to the Blackfeet Nation, is a point of pride.”
Though the team's name has long been controversial, it's important to note that it was a Blackfeet man from Montana who originally designed its logo.
Blackie's son, Don Wetzel Sr. told the Tribune in 2014 that his father's logo was not derogatory, but instead was "... something that represents the Red Nation in a positive way.”
