We are a Lego Robotics team called Epic Pineapples. The Lego Robotics challenge this year is ‘Trash Trek’. Our team monitored and classified what kinds of trash our families generate. We generated a lot of food trash and plastic trash.

From the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), we learnt that 20% of all garbage produced by a family is food waste. That is why, we narrowed our focus to understand how food waste is processed. Farm waste is composted by industrial processes but food waste produced by families goes to the landfill. So, we would like to petition the county to compost food-waste.

Advantages of composting are as:
1. Reduce climate change

If we throw plant matter in the garbage, then it goes in the landfill . There is no oxygen in the landfill so it creates methane. Methane is a green house gas, which is 20 times worse then carbon dioxide. Green house gasses cause global warming, which is the primary cause of climate change. Climate change endangers animal and human life on this planet. 

2. Reduce water pollution 
If farms use compost instead of chemical fertilizer, compost returns valuable nutrients to the soil.  Chemical fertilizers run off and pollute our water sources.

3. Offset garbage collection costs

Sale of compost can offset garbage collection costs. Composting operations can create jobs within the county.
