Rare trees, rare birds, rare plants, rare moths, a very rare fungus, many bats, beetles and other insects, lichens and so much more. The photo is of a rare Phoenix regenerating SL Lime.
Our conservation group (not the WildlifeTrust) carried out lots of surveys in Piles Coppice last year. Here are some of the species we recorded that we believe are under threat.
27 different trees, the mature Small-leaved Limes are rare. There are many veteran oaks, but also veteran Crab Apples, Rowans, Cherries, Field Maples, Pines and Thorns.
Over 30 birds, including 3 different Hawks, 5 different Warblers, 3 different Thrushes and all 3 Wood-peckers. The Lesser-spotted is known to be declining due to woodland management.
Over 100 plants including, many indicators of ancient woodland. Too many to list, but the bluebells, anemones and yellow archangel are spreading year on year.
120 moths, some thought to be extinct in Warks. and one Red Data book that only lives in Small-leaved Limes and never recorded locally. All highly indicative of a healthy wood.
16 butterflies, including Purple Emperor, although we believe that was recently introduced into Warwickshire.
The Trust claim the wood lacks biodiversity!
