7-Eleven, stop treating Australian workers like slaves

The issue

In Australia everyone has a right to fair pay for their hard work. The award rate is $24 / hour and while it's not much, 7-Eleven has been exposed for ripping off staff and paying them $10 an hour, before tax.

Explosive internal documents reveal that between July and August this year 7-Eleven head office reviewed the payroll compliance at 225 stores and found that 69 stores had ongoing payroll issues. This is equivalent to one in four stores based on one month's review.

The range of apparently illegal activity by franchisees extends beyond wage fraud and includes blackmail and withholding passports and drivers licences of staff.

As a 7-Eleven insider told the journalists "The reality is it's built on something not much different from slavery"

Sam Pendem is a student from India, who no doubt was optimistic about working in the land of a fair go. But the reality at 7-Eleven was pay as low as $10 an hour, robbed twice in the space of a day and then told he should have thrown a punch at the robber.

As a student I was a dishpig at Pizza hut, and while it wasn't fun, I was at least paid the minimum wage. Everyone deserves that.

I'm boycotting 7-Eleven until this stops.

Join me and tell CEO Warren Wilmot to stop the exploitation of workers, and pay them the award wage.
