Invest in Our City's Future
The Issue
Brighton & Hove businesses are deeply concerned about the City Council’s proposal to cut the budget to youth services.
These proposed cuts are short-sighted and could potentially damage the long-term ambitions for economic growth and prosperity because of the knock-on effect it will have on our businesses in terms of recruitment and investment.
For every £1 spent in youth and community services, there is a net social return of £5.56.
Based on the £1: £5.56 ratio, an £800,000 budget cut will generate a future cost to Brighton & Hove of £4,448,000 in policing, health services, homelessness support and community care.
These proposed cuts are risking the future employment of our youth and putting at risk Brighton & Hove as being a business destination of choice - increasing social issues, long-term future unemployment, and potential rising crime do not make any city attractive.
Investing less in youth and community services today, sets up significant future costs to our city that run into millions of pounds. This is eminently avoidable, if we take the right course of action now.
